Fellow Kossack and frequent diarist here Rebecca Kaplan (Reb Kaplan)is running for the very coveted "At-Large" seat on the Oakland City Council. Rebecca's diverse experience as a civil rights attorney, Director for the AC Transit Board, and known Progressive Oakland City Activist makes her the right choice for Oakland City Council. She is also a huge Obama supporter.
Please join us for a FUNDRAISER on Thursday, July 31st 5-7pm @ The Bulldog Coffeeshop in Oaksterdam district of Oakland.
First it's easy to support Rebecca. There is no more wonderful experience in politics than to meet a politician that you know is BIG now and will be even more so in the future. Rebecca is certainly one of those. Oakland and the East Bay can't do any better. She is one public official to get behind and support as she reaches for her goals.
Kossacks - plain and simple - Rebecca is one of us. You will never find a more committed Progressive Democrat. If you like to pick rising stars early on I'd recommend getting on board the Rebecca Kaplan Bandwagon now.
It's widely known - an "open secret" that Ms. Kaplan is "family" and as nice and generous a person as you will meet anywhere. I heard about her campaign early on in the local Gay Community Rags and knew I wanted to support it. The LGBTQ community has backed her 100% as has the majority of Oaklanders in the June primary. Lucky for her here (and most don't know this) Oakland has the 4th largest Gay Community in the Country.
Electing Rebecca gets the LGBTQ Community a seat at the table. Not that we've not had folks on the council before or support there - just not one of our own in a very long while. And even more exciting than that is Rebecca's support is much much larger and broader than this core constituency.
Ms. Kaplan is also widely known as the official champion of the Oaksterdam District in Oakland. The Broadway Corridor is important to her and she is working hard on redevelopment efforts for this area. Oaksterdam will always be appreciative for her efforts as a major contributor to the Prop Z law that won by overwhelming approval by Oakland voters in 2004. By over 65%!

Kaplan has support of others as well - it includes the Democratic Party, the California Nurses Association, Central Labor Council, The Green Party, Oakland Firefighters Association, Asian Pacific Caucus, Harvey Milk LBGT Democratic Club, Victory Fund, the Oakland Tribune, and Bay Guardian newspapers and many more groups since the beginning of the year.
Kaplan won first place in the June 3rd Primary election with 40% of the vote in a very large field. She is in a run-off with the second place in the general election this November. She has thanked all all of the contributors, volunteers, and supporters that have helped her get past that first phase. The June 3rd victory party was something special - sorry you might have missed it. Rebecca is in a great position to win the run-off in November.
I am inviting you to support her candidacy. Join Team Kaplan and help her win the coveted At-Large City Council seat this fall.
There will be a FUNDRAISER for Kaplan for Oakland on Thursday, July 31st 5-7pm @ The Bulldog Coffeeshop in Oaksterdam district of Oakland.
