Well, Nancy Pelosi has finally done it. She has gone and proved that she is nothing but a coward and a political idiot. She has just lost Democrats a US Senate seat and perhaps the Presidency. Good job Nancy. (SNARK!!)
On Monday of this week in a debate that he clearly won, Mark Udall, in response to a taunt from his opponent Bob "Big Oil" Schaffer promised to vote against adjournment of the US House until comprehensive energy legislation was considered.
Yesterday, while on a plane back to Washington, for what was supposed to be a Friday vote on adjournment, Speaker Pelosi, with 10 minutes warning, brought the motion for adjournment to the floor. It passed by one vote. Guess where Mark Udall was. On a plane.
More after the fold.
As you all know, this open Colorado Senate seat was one of the Democrats top pick-up opportunities of the year. Well, you can kiss it good-bye. Even Dick "Macaca" Wadhams (who runs the state party and the Schaffer U.S. Senate campaign) isn't stupid enough to blow this opportunity. The ads will be up within days. A clip of the Udall promise. A picture of Udall at a fundraiser. A picture of a nervous Udall on a plane. A screen shot with the vote to adjourn, winning with a single vote. Bob Schaffer saying, I approved this message because Mark Udall doesn't keep his promises. Fade to black.
Folks, you can say good-bye to this U.S. Senate seat. Take it completely off the list. Mark it dark red.
But more than that. Colorado Republicans were demoralized and ready for a beating. They weren't working and Dems were looking for increased majorities in the legislature, a new U.S. Senator and 9 Electoral Votes for Obama and maybe even getting rid of the "Pink Lady" Marilyn Musgrave. With the new Republican enthusiasm it's less likely that Obama will carry the state too. With Republicans newly energized and the "fertilized egg is a person" initiative on the ballot, things could go very wrong here. It was close and difficult for Obama here anyway, and this can be the thing that breaks the camel's back. Can anyone say, Colorado, swing state? Can anyone say, what a way to waste an opportunity in Colorado this year? Can anyone say way to waste the bump the convention would give to a swing state? Can any one say (of God, please don't make me do it) President McCain?
Well, here's all I can say. F---- you Madam Speaker. Hope you enjoy your vacation this summer. Hope you get a very deserved vacation from any leadership role ever again in November.
P.S. Don't try to undo this. The damage is already done. Just look at yourself in the mirror every morning and remember what you have just done.
