Today, my friend Evan, who works at the Birchwood Country Club in Harbor Springs, Michigan was given the opportunity to wash dishes for members of the Heritage Foundation.
From what Evan tells me, the lady in charge of the meeting for the infamous think-tank was very abrasive and rude to the servers and caterers at his work, even going so far as to demand not one but two sheets covering their main glass rack and more importantly, the ice-cube trays that lie underneath it. There were multiple times in which Evan and his fellow dishwashers were ordered to cease their jobs as the noise from the machines and sprayers were intolerable to the right-wing cultists in the dining area.
There were several meetings at this event, but it was casual, more of a business meeting among various higher-ups in the Foundation. This makes sense as the Country Club is a very expensive and well-regarded establishment in the area. It is connected to a golf course which is intertwined with a very large private community of mega-multi-million-dollar McMansions. The president of Sun Microsystems, rock musician Bob Seger, and Tom Cruise are a few of the folk rumored to own homes in this place. It should not surprise me that the Heritage Foundation would turn up around here, but I was, regardless, when Evan informed me for whom he washed dishes all day.
He was nice enough to snatch a large blue poster from the dumpster and bring it to me. I plan on taking a large black marker to it and making guerrilla art out of it. Feel free to comment if anyone out there has any ideas on what I could do, or even better, know where an itinerary or guest list of this little meeting can be obtained so it can determined just which walking corpses were frighteningly close to where I live. I read and write all day long about right-wing groups and those associated with them, but I still have a something of a disconnect from it. It's still a little shocking to see them turn up in my everyday life, even though Alberto Gonzales was in town about six months ago, if I recall correctly.
Either way, I know it is not the most earth shattering item of news going around these days, but I have not written a diary in a while so I thought I would share it...
