There is a fly who has become trapped in a house. He is in the window and decides that he just needs to keep flying at the window with enough force to break through it. When he isn't successful, he decides that perseverance is the answer and repeats the effort multiple times.
Of course, his efforts result in failure. He does not possess the strength to break the window. It is a noble endeavor and his earnest intentions are to be respected. He sees the goal right in front of him, and the solution seems blatantly obvious to him.
In spite of the failure of his attempts, he continues, thinking that anything else would be quitting and irresponsible. He becomes more and more fatigued as a result. Still he tries again.
Sadly, there is an open door a few feet away. There is another option with a possibility of success. He has become so intensely committed to his struggle that he hasn't looked around to see what else is possible.
Fighting the FISA bill was a noble effort. It was with sincere and honest concern for the country formed with intelligence and passion. However, it is a done deal.
The fight has become the window. There are other concerns that need to be addressed and are over there in the doorway. The war, the economy, health care, and the environment need our help, and it is obvious a Republican administration headed by McCain may be even worse than the present one. Let's go to the door and exert our energy, time, and donations to something very possible and necessary.
