I was working at the Obama Office today and a man came in. He asked me the most basic question, and I couldn't anwser it. I mean, I am a dedicated Obama supporter, I have given money, and so much time to this campaign, I have learned most of the issues and have versed myself on the different smear campaigns so I would know how to address them.
But, I didn't know how to anwser the question,
"How do we know that he will be able to bring about the change that he wants? How do we know that he won't get in there and realize that bringing about real change is hard work, and can't get the rest of the Washington politicians to go along?"
This man was about 50-55 years old. He was one of the "White, Working Class" voters that Hillary Clinton talked so much about. He said he was a Ron Paul supporter, but he really liked Sen. Obama. He was a union member, worked for GM for 31 years, a Vietnam Vet, and I could tell that he really wanted to believe.
He said that he was sick of Bush and that McCain was just another Bush. He wants Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld to be tried for war crimes. He said that he was disappointed in the way our country was viewed in other parts of the world. He said that he really thinks that we need a change, but if he isn't convinced that Barack Obama can deliver, he will write in himself.
He said that people had been discouraging him from supporting Sen. Obama (Muslim rumors and all that), but he really liked his message, and liked the fact that he had a great story. That he wasn't a rich guy. born with a silver spoon in his mouth, that he was just a smart guy who worked hard for everything that he has gotten.
I was disappointed in myself that I couldn't give him a extra push. But, I talked him into coming to a house meeting and he said that he would come. So I have another opportunity. Please help me decide what to say to him. I can tell he really wants to believe in Sen. Obama, but he has become so cynical about politics and politicians.
