This article on Politico.com could be the bright spot of McCain's week. After a week that saw him change the citizenship of 300 million Americans http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/... deploy a quasi-Presidential envoy to Georgia http://www.allheadlinenews.com/... and, yet again, making a statement that would surely end anybody else's campaign http://www.allheadlinenews.com/... comes this BIG (read: minor) press victory.
It appears that the owners of professional sports teams are backing McCain by a 5:1 ratio (3.2 mil to 615k). Even in Obama's city of Chicago, McCain outraised almost 6:1.
Shocked at the numbers, yes. Shocked at the fact McCain is winning the all important, pro sports team owner demographic that will be so crucial this fall, not so much. Old Money v New Money. Profesional Sports Ownership is the last bastion of the "Old Boys Club". Formerly this group included golf country clubs and soon we will be taking the Office of POTUS of the list.
Example? Look no further than Chicago, specifically the baseball owners. McCain got 26,600 from the owners of the (22000)Cubs and (2300)Sox, Obama(4600) got the same amount from both.
Chicago, where "New Money" man, Mark Cuban, someone our generation can identify with a la Obama, is currently being made to jump through hoops to purchase the Cubbies from "Old MOney" man Sam Zell, someone who McSame's camp can relate to.
Baseball owners say Cuban is "too flashy, too brash, outspoken, he's arrogant. He made his money on the internet tube thingy, that cant possibly be legit?"
Nevermind that Cuban turned a perrenial loser like the Mavs, totaly around over the last decade. Nevermind that the fans want him, he's scary and we cant afford to risk that. Nevermind that Cub ownership have been trying to get a buyer for sometime now, but Cuban just doesnt seem like the type who will go into the back room and smoke cigars with us and stroke our egos. He might actually KNOW what he's doing!!
As this battle for baseball's loveable losers ownership continues, Im reminded of how John McCain got his money and career the old way, ya marry into it.
Update 1: here's an article from the "Old Gray Lady", on the stupidity that is the Cubs/MLB Owner/Mark Cuban saga
