Well, we just had a very interesting visit that fired me up a bit. We're a gay couple who are about to get married soon, so the two visitors that knocked on our door this morning were more than a little caught off guard when I opened the door with my Obama shirt on & things got interesting...
The knock was innocent enough, and of course our Bassett Hound went nuts, barking as she always does continuously until either the visitor leaves or she gets bored of barking. When I opened the door, I saw a very nice looking, well dressed older couple (probably at least in their 70's). They had "Vote in 2008" stickers on, and the lady had a clipboard in her hand. There was no other indication of a sticker or button that showed any type of religious or political leaning that I could see. One thing should have been a clue to me though: her hair was in a bun, and she had a skirt on. In this area of CA, on a Saturday morning, that always equals a definite "religious right" person. I just didn't notice it until later as we talked.
I said "Hello", thinking this was a simple voter registration door knock (we get those all the time, always Obama supporters this year).
The wife (assuming here) began talking with a simple question, "Do you know about Proposition 8?" She kept talking without letting me answer, apparently it was rhetorical! "It is very important to Californians, as important as Proposition 22 was a few years ago." Note: the husband (assuming again) nodded the whole time, sort of smiling, and some time later this became a grimace - but never talking once throughout the whole exchange.
The minute I heard Proposition 22 used as a (incredibly inept) comparison to Prop 8, I stopped her by saying, "Well, we're a gay couple, and we're getting married. So, I would say that we definitely do not support the Prposition." I kept it pleasant, trying to make a potentially unpleasant discussion go away. (Note: this is where the husband started grimacing, I wonder why?)
Without hesitation, she responded, "Do you mean you would rather see the will of the people overturned?"
My dog started growling...
(note to self: she gets her favorite treats for the rest of the day)
My response, once again intending to get rid of a potentially nasty debate I really didn't feel like having, "This is a basic civil rights issue."
Her husband tapped her on the shoulder, pointed to the door next door, and they walked away, no response except the shocked look on her face.
My last response, "Thanks!" I'm about as "straight-acting" as they come, but at this point I had to add a little swagger as I closed the door.
They're using Proposition 22 to "prop up" support for Proposition 8? Oh my God, the insanity of McCain is bleeding into CA! They obviously haven't READ the Supreme Court decision, or they'd know they're effort is doomed even as they continue to knock doors.
