Despite the "conventional wisdom" that Obama's dreams of winning Georgia are just that, new Rasmussen polls show that not only does Obama have a reasonable shot at winning Georgia, but Democratic candidate Jim Martin has an even better shot of unseating horrible Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss.
Rasmussen:
Jim Martin, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate after defeating Vernon Jones in a run-off primary election earlier this month, is now trailing incumbent Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss by just six percentage points. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the Peach State finds the incumbent ahead of his challenger 48% to 43%.
When “leaners” are included, Chambliss leads 50% to 44%.
The number to look at is the one without leaners. A five-point race? Chambliss below the magic 50% line? Its just one poll, but the last one showed an 11 point race, also winnable. And this is before the race really gets going. I don't believe either candidate is on the air yet with ads.
And in the presidential race:
John McCain now leads Barack Obama 50% to 43% in Georgia. That’s little changed from a month ago when McCain held a nine-point advantage. When “leaners” are included, the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of the Peach State finds the Republican leading 53% to 44%.
A seven point race is certainly winnable. Don't forget, we still don't know how turnout is going to be, especially amongst African Americans. The Obama campaign has been very active here and has been trying to register the 500 thousand unregistered African Americans. McCain does not even have a campaign office in Georgia, Obama has 13.
I think we have a chance here, in both races.
