I may be a Rhode Islander now, but I was born and raised just outside New Haven, CT. I was born in the same hospital as George W. Bush, which is pretty darn freaky. I also had an apartment (for a short time) two blocks from Joe Lieberman's house, in the upscale neighborhood near Yale Golf Course along Forest Road.
Unfortunately, a common birthplace or basic neighborly respect is about where I draw the line with these two. Lieberman has crossed that line too many times, starting before I was truly able to understand my own political beliefs. In fact, he's crossed it so much and so far that he's been on the other side of it more often than any of us here could possibly accept.
So when the rumors started to go around that John McCain might pick Lieberman for his VP slot, I thought to myself "well that's not at all refreshing, different, or even, dare I say, maverick." These two senators have more in common than just voting patterns:
Senate Roll Call : Authorization to Use Military Force in Iraq - The interesting thing here is McCain claims to not have originally supported this, but he voted for it! Yet the media continually portrays him as someone who opposed it, because he stood up in the Senate and gave a good speech.
All hat, no cattle. Just like Dubya. Lesse what else do McCain and Lieberman have in common...
Senate Roll Call: Bankruptcy Reform
Class Action Tort Reform
I could keep going.. but I think it's pretty clear. McCain is no maverick - he's a line-toeing car salesman, and Lieberman is exactly the kind of quisling that would round out the ticket as the 'Ignore the Bush behind the curtain' team.
So go ahead, John. I dare you to put Joe on the ticket. I'm sure many of us would just love to bring out some more common threads between the three of you.
