I don't know if this qualifies as substantive enough to diary about, but I just thought I'd share some anti-Obama sentiments I've been hearing from some very nice women. I frequent a forum on a website for women who are trying to conceive. I'd noticed over the last couple of months that these are some of the most caring and compassionate women you could hope to come across. Everyone is always there for each other with supportive comments, helpful tips and real empathy for the pain of infertility and loss. You get a real sense of sisterhood and community with these women.
Anyway, most of the posts are fertility related, but there is an "Off-Topic" section where people discuss different things. I've been seeing some pretty political posts recently, and this morning there was one about how Obama is receiving illegal contributions from Palestinians (non-American). The poster linked to a publication called the "American Thinker" (http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/08/obamas_donor_contributions_sil.html), which judging by a quick glance is an ultra right-wing outfit, saying that her attorney friend e-mailed the story to her. (I don't know if the story has any merit or not.) It's about time someone started calling Obama out on this stuff, she said. Pretty soon, there were more women talking about how the press has been unfair to McCain and how Obama was just their golden boy. There are even some who have anti-Obama signature blinkies.
These are nice women from all over the country. They go through heart-wrenching pain in their quest to become mothers and they nurture and support each other through the hard times. Even though I've never met any of them and I only know them in a cyber sense, I shed tears for their miscarriages and I feel happy when one of them reports a positive pregnancy test after long months of trying. I care about them. But most of them will probably vote for McCain come November.
Back when Gore lost the presidency, I used to wonder what kind of morons could vote for a Republican like Bush. That was back when I didn't know this country very well. Now I know that perfectly good Americans like the women on my fertility forum are the ones who cast these votes. It's all very sad. Good people, yet so uninformed and misguided.
