When Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were slugging it out in the Democratic Primary, I told my husband that "all things being equal" I wanted a woman to get the nomination. Well, things didn't work out that way. I would have been extremely happy with Hillary as our nominee, but am enthusiastically supporting Obama.
Now John McCain is running an ad trying to get former Hillary supporters, like me, to vote for him or at least question Obama's support of women. How is that possible? Ignoring for a minute that McCain is the presumptive nominee of a party that is hostile to everything I believe in, he must expect me to make my voting decision based upon jilted feelings and not my best interests. Isn't this the most insulting way to treat anyone much less a woman? It just reinforces that old boy belief that women just aren't rational.
Why would I vote for a man who used the Ledbetter decision to state that women needed better job training when the decision actually denied equal pay for equal work? McCain was totally clueless on this basic right denied by the SCOTUS which was hidden behind a filing a complaint "timing" scam. Why would I vote for a man who voted to end Title X family planning program? Why would I vote for a man who voted against requiring insurance companies to provide birth control? Why would I vote for a man who has embraced the "agents of intolerance" their anti-feminist rhetoric? Why would I vote for a man who laughed when Hillary was called a "bitch" at a townhall meeting? Why would I vote for a man who told disgusting jokes about Chelsea Clinton?
Sorry, John, but I'm not buying. And I bet I won't be alone.
