I understand that Senator McCain's pick of Governor Palin has already been diaried to death. However, I thought I would share the immediate reactions of the women in my life. Personally, they reaffirmed why I admire all of them so much.
My wife has a two-year surgical technologist's degree as well as a Bachelor's of Science in Business Administration with a focus on Health Care Administration. Because our local economy is so depressed, she currently works laying carpet, hardwood, and other flooring in addition to keeping the children of a friend who works until early evening each night. This is her immediate reaction:
Apparently McCain thinks he can just pick any fucking woman and we'll all fall in line!
My 24 year old sister recently graduated from The George Washington University then spent a semester working on AIDS relief and community development in Cameroon. She currently works for the World Justice Project. She recently helped plan for and conduct their World Justice Forum in Vienna, Austria. She saw my wife's response and responded with the following:
Yah, that was pretty much my reaction...FYI Best stat ever-Palin's city where she was mayor is 1-20th the size of our man's [Obama's] state senate district.
My mother is a curriculum coordinator for a depressed school district. She moved into administration, initially as a middle school principal, ten years ago after about twenty-years of teaching English Language Arts and Government/Social Studies. She is currently enrolled in a doctoral Education Administration degree program through The George Washington University. She had two reactions:
No way! No how! No McCain!
and
Mc just proved he can PLAY politics-not think or govern!
My best friend's wife began raising her two kids on her own before they married. The two of them have a third child together. She is an amazing mother and an intimidating personality. Also, she is currently a grocery store department head and never seemed to speak much of or pay much attention to politics until this year. This is her pitch-perfect response:
Wow, it's so obvious why he did that.
I would say that I was surprised by these reactions, but I wasn't. These are just a few of the inspirational women in my life, I they responded in the exact manner in which I expected.
I would say McCain's decision was insulting to women, and all voters, throughout the country, but they, as usual, already said it better than I ever could.
