We should pull together an effort to organize a massive fund drive to assist the coming victims of Hurricane Gustav. Let's not let the Republicans use the hurricane as gigantic photop.
I see Obama has pledged his email list but I am talking about us doing a massive drive like we have done for him and others!
I am throwing open an idea for others with more internet savy to consider. We have all read the McCain/Palin duo has gone down to Mississippi for a 'photop' and the RNC is discussing the possible use of their Convention for a gigantic telethon to help the likely hurricane victims of Gustav. Well good for them if they do and it benefits all in need, but I can't but feel like this is going to become politicized just like everything else this administration touches.
So after musing this scenario for awhile today up here in Minneapolis while reading the Frank Rich column in the New York Times about how brilliantly Obama's campaign has used the internet, the following thought bubble popped up in front of me. Rich notes that much of Obama's campaign has been under the radar of the MSM. There is also an obvious technical divide between McCain and Obama's use of the 'internets'. And even the use of the word 'telethon' by the RNC conjures up images of Jerry Lewis on a television fund drive. Well Obama's launching a competing 'telethon' would appear to be politically incorrect and we don't have the built in Convention TV advantage already setup. SO what might we do?
That is when the obvious hit me - Whenever I think of Palin, and Alaska I keep remembering Senator 'Tubz" Stevens and 'the internets'. Why don't we organize a massive charity fund drive using all the technical links and resources which have built to support not only Obama, and Hillary, but also the '50 State' Democratic Party campaign strategy, in order to help those fellow Americans who soon will be in great need of assistance.
Doing this over the internet as a network of decentralized self-organizing citizens is an appealing contrast to the use of the tired telethon model.
I don't think we should rely on this Republican Administration or the Red Cross to carry out all the relief efforts this time around. Many of you know how to organize political fund drives on the net - how about putting together the means to show the nation what it means when we say 'Yes We Can" !
