As much as I would like to smack the 39% of people polled by CBS who had no compunction about telling a fellow human being over the phone that they would prefer John McCain to be the next President of the United States over Barack Obama, I find myself not so worried. Here's why below the fold (note - the word Vice President will not appear anywhere in the discussion, because seriously, who cares?)
Reason number one why we shouldn't sweat Obama's logic defying single digit lead is simply that a lot of people aren't following the election at this point. Not everybody is like us, they don't pay attention to politics 24/7 and frankly I can't blame them, because it drives me nuts most of the time. Every day that passes where George W. Bush is not impeached, tried, jailed, and beaten by his fellow inmates makes me want to hit someone. So that is one thing we've got going for us, the typical Americans will start paying attention around the time Saturday Night Live comes back on the air in late September.
Another thing in the plus column is the fact that his campaign essentially has John McCain in the witness protection program. Compared to Obama, you never see the guy. Think about it, McCain rarely appears in his own ads! Once the debates happen and McCain is forced to appear on stage next to Obama appearing 6 1/2 inches shorter, 24 years & 340 days older, and a whole lot dumber, Obama is going to get a big bump.
The Obama convention speech broadcast on all 3 major networks is sure to be one of the greatest speeches of all time. John McCain's, not so much.
August 29th - John McCain's birthday. What's worse than being 71 years old? Being 72 years old.
Upcoming anniversaries that don't work well for the Republicans - Katrina, 9/11 (a good time to remind people how Bush & McCain went off to Iraq and ignored the people that actually attacked us - time for a noun, a verb & Afghanistan), the first Monday in October where we remind any remaining PUMA nuts that 3 liberal Supreme Court Justices are going to retire during the next administration, and finally, in late October, the day that George W. Bush patted Johnny McCain on the back and turned the podium over to him to announce the passage of the AUMF in Iraq Bill, which you can watch here (fast forward to 1:52 to see the Lieberman, Bush, McCain self-congratulatory lovefest ...
