I am a high school government teacher. Just recently, we have been discussing the differences between the Democratic and Republican platforms. When the topic of gay marriage was raised, I gingerly explained how the two parties GENERALLY feel about the subject. (Try doing that in a class of 25 immature boys)
Anyway, I haven't been able to stop thinking about what a great commercial or soundbite this would make for a candidate trying to defend his support of gay marriage.
MORE BELOW THE FOLD
Commercial starts with someone talking into the camera.
"My mother (sister, wife, etc...) was raped and murdered on December 15th, 2005. Her murderer, (insert name) was sentenced to life in prison without parole." (Show some graphic pics or pics of a grieving family)
"Recently, John Doe (murders' name) was allowed to marry while he serves his sentence for the brutal rape and murder. Meanwhile, I am told that my (same-sex) partner and I cannot be married because the state says it "destroys the sanctity of marriage."
"I only wish that someone could explain to me how a convicted murderer and rapist has more rights than a person that wants nothing more than to be able to share his life with the person he loves."
POSSIBLE ADDITION: Throw in the name of the oppossing candidate that is against gay marriage and ask him or her that rhetorical question at the end.
END COMMERCIAL
I know this may be a "cheap" shot, but it's the truth. How in the hell will a politician against gay marriage be able to defend this? I think this commercial could help point out the hypocracy that many of us see in banning gay marriage. What do you guys think?
