We have given McCain a pass on his war record because... well, we are gentlemen and he did serve his country, got wounded and suffered many years of tough incarceration and even torture. But there is alot at stake this year, and when I saw Obama bending over backwards to give honor to McCain's war hero status, it made me wonder.
We know in 2004 Bush/Rove attacked Kerry's war record successfully, even though Kerry was a decorated hero and Bush was too busy to report to his National Guard duties. What if we take on McCain on the weak points of his military service? Took the fight directly into the strength of the enemy. Chip away at his strongest point as a candidate? For instance, I think he crashed 5 planes in is military carreer. That's 5 multi-million dollar assets that belonged to all of us. Was he an incompetent pilot? He did graduate 5th from the bottom of his graduating class at Annapolis in a class of around 500 students. And just how does years of prison camp affect the personality of a prisoner? Does that experience make a person less likely to make rational decisions about war later in life?
I loved Wesley Clark's quote that just because a man got shot down in battle did not necessarily qualify him to be president. I would love to amplify that into an orchestrated questioning of McCain's ability to serve as Commander in Chief BECAUSE of his military record. If Barack was uncomfortable with this line of attack, he could employ Clark or Webb or other veterans to do it for him. It might be effective.
