As is often the case, I woke up thinking about our country and the horrible position it is in right now, and it got me to thinking, crazily about what an under-achiever I really am. By that, I mean, that I usually only fuck up a few things a week, and because of my lack of commitment to the ideology of fucking things up, I have them corrected before anyone knows it happened, most of the time.. (Spineless lack of determination on my part.) BUT BUSH!!!!! He is truly an over-achiever. I won't even begin to take on the entire scope of the now almost 8 years of relentless pursuit of catastrophe that this "President" has undertaken from day one, but I will at least cover the highlights.
First, he had to get all of the wrong people in all of the right places. This not only entailed getting them there, but getting rid of the competent, non-corrupt ones who were there before. (Richard Clarke) I mean, what genius to start with Dick Cheney. I'd never have thought of it, would you? Of course not. No one would. Actually, even George didn't think of it. Dick Cheney thought of it, and passed the idea on to Bush, through a selection committee headed by, umm.. Dick Cheney. AND THEN!!!! a whole huge list of people, connected in so many ways to shady operations, and politics of destruction, KNOWN to be lunatics and tyrants. Rumsfeld, Gonzalez, Negroponte,... . The "Murderer's Row" of the 1927 Yankees ain't got nuttin' on these guys. ( First of all, the 1927 Yankees weren't actually murderers.)
Next, Bush needed a major event to really kick-start his plans for fucking things up. Normally, ignoring the "memo", disregarding all intelligence, and shrugging off all the warnings of the previous administration, all leading up to 9-11: well, that would do it for me. End of the day. End of the road. It's Miller TIme! George had to work it so that he not only did all those things, but the WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD thought he was a hero! (Daily Kos readers were ALL smarter than that.) I mean, a normal human being would be exhausted by now, or so full of self-doubt or self-loathing, it'd be over. NOT OUR BOY GEORGE... he's just getting started!
Then there's on to Afghanistan, Iraq, Global Warming, Katrina, destroying manufacturing AND white collar employment, rampant corruption in EVERY government agency and making sure that Congress and the Senate "friends" got their taste, too. And folks, let me tell you, maybe after 9-11, he had a few months of easy going, but that didn't last THAT long. There were vocal critic's careers to destroy, along the way. Again, Mr. Clarke, and Joseph Wilson, and Valerie Plame, (Mrs. Wilson.) There was the ever skeptical voter, but in as much as they never elected him in the first OR second place, he knew he could get around them. I mean, face it people.. the man had to work like the devil, literally, to get us to the place we are now. Our country is on the verge of financial collapse, AND THE MOST AMAZING THING IS... HE'S STILL GOT 124 DAYS LEFT!!! I mean, we may not have seen his swan song, yet. His Grand finale.. his coup de gras.
John McCain, if he gets in, has certainly got his hands full. This is no easy act to follow, and in deed, I don't think it will ever be done again. Thankfully, Bush has managed to eliminate the balance of powers and the press (thanks Bill Clinton) necessary to prevent such catastrophes from happening in the first place. So, McCain MAY be able to keep up the bad work, but it won't be easy, and may just be impossible. He'll have to work tirelessly, and at his age, I'm not sure he has the strength, drive or determination. He does possess the unquenchable lust for power, and the lying skills of a true sociopath. He also has an amazingly promising VEEP choice to carry on if he falters. (Now, she definitely shows promise.)
So, there it is folks. I mean, we will look back on this past 8 years, (the history paper shredders haven't destroyed, yet) and we will be amazed at the scope, magnitude and determination of this disastrous administration and wonder, just HOW did he manage to get it all done. Well, folks.. let me tell you, it was no accident.
