With the disastrous results of deregulation and Republican corruption becoming clear, Obama has rebounded in the polls. However, the Obama campaign still is not choosing to put this election out of reach of McCain.
How do you do this? You mention that as one of the Keating 5, McCain is one of the 5 least-qualified people in the entire country to lead a reform of the finance sector.
That would tank McCain. I know that some of the readers on DailyKos don't remember the scandal, but for those of us who do, it was a big deal. And young voters are already voting Obama. It is the older voters who need swaying anyway.
There is no downside - why not hammer home the connection with Keating and put this election away?!
I want to note one anticipated response to this question. It seems that Democrats seem to think that evoking a connection between Keating and McCain allows McCain to link Obama to Rev. Wright or other folks. But if you think that, you haven't been paying attention. McCain will bring these things up if it is beneficial to him, regardless of the truth. In fact, the Democrats should never avoid making a point for fear of the response - McCain's statements don't need a fact behind them! More importantly, the connection to Keating will stick because that is actually relevant to the dissaster we face today!
Obama can add to this punch a reminder that John McCain wanted to privatize social security and take away our economic safety blanket. (In fact, I don't see anything on the topic on his website!) While young readers might not care about the fall of the stock market, I assure you that the older voters who are supporting McCain definitely are feeling a personal hit to their wealth right now, and will be sensitive to the fact that their quality of life will be worse under McCain than under Obama.
Props go to Sen. Brown for raising these issues, but with all the shouting that is going on in this election, it takes many more repetitions of this message for it to be heard by the voters. Tell the Obama campaign that you want to go for the win. Tell them to talk about Keating!
