My son started Kindergarten in 2003. The school was awesome and his teacher was wonderful. We loved and trused them. We also teach our kids the facts of life early, including a=the scientific names for parts and what they are for.
Still, I was taken aback when I got a permission form for him to be taught about AIDS in a district-wide program that goes to every school
The form included a series of times where parents can come and view the material and ask questions.
So I did.
Turns out, Kindergarten AIDS education teaches kids NOT to touch other kids' blood, how germs are spread from kid to kid (including cold and flu), and to NOT ostracise people who are sick.
Each year a bit more information is given, to build on the fundamental knowledge and safety information.
That is all.
I live in liberal Northern Calfornia, we are paraiahs to the RW.
This is the worst fear of the culture wars, and frankly...
it's MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING.
Everything is done of 100% parental information, 100% consent, you have to opt in...an nsigned form is an opt out....and it is entirely age appropriate.
Just thought I'd share my experience.
UPDATE: the reason I wrote this was that I just saw a McCain HACK on Hardball profess an extreme fear that culture has corroded to the point that people will be for teaching explicit sex ed in Kindergarden. This guy was so deluded with preconceptions and exactly NO actual information.
