I was driving home today when it hit me: I hadn't seen a bumper sticker with Support Our Troops on it for months. For years now, I've grated my teeth and clenched my fists on the wheel when I saw one of those damned bumper stickers - and they were everywhere. They weren't calling on us to support our troops, they were calling on us to support GW's War of Aggression. I freaking HATED those God Damned bumper stickers more than anything I can think of in recent memory.
So where the hell did they all go? Did the conservatives all wake up one day and suddenly realize how SHAMEFUL those bumper stickers were? Did they have enough of hearing about it from their neighbors?
Where did they go?
I could just imagine people covering over their Support Our Troops stickers with Like My Driving? Dial 1-800-EAT SHIT or with If you can read this you're too close. A car went by with McCain 08. Now THAT Fucker stuck it over his Support Our Troops sticker. Hell yeah.
But no. As the traffic went by I kept looking. SOMEBODY must still have one on their car...don't they? Nope, none, nada, zilch. Nowhere.
WTF?
Then it hit me. A nice new Lexus went by. Then a Mustang. God I love the new Mustang. Too bad it only gets 19mpg. Then a new pickup and a new SUV.
A new SUV? That guy's gotta be fucking kidding right?
And it hit me. They didn't go out and cover up their Support Our Troops stickers in shame. They went out and bought new cars and they just didn't put new stickers on them because, you know, THEY FORGOT.
They'd already had their $2 Feel Good Moment, their knee jerk reaction to the GOP party line so they just forgot to, you know, SUPPORT OUR TROOPS.
Now. When our troops are coming home all shot up, maimed both physically and psychologically. When our troops need our support the most. NOW they just....forget.
It's not got any political power anymore. There's no money in supporting our troops. Not right NOW. But you know, just wait a while, whenever the conservative propaganda wing needs them all stirred up for another war. They'll be back, "supporting" our troops more than ever.
