I am about as average as you can get as a senior citizen. Not a whole lot of social security, not a whole lot of money put aside and yes, I still have a mortgage to pay off.
Maybe that puts me below average, I don't know. I'm surviving but I certainly am not thriving. Going out to dinner once in a while, taking in a movie, buying some stuff at some place besides Saks I can do. But not much more.
What confuses me is this: why are half the voters supporting Republicans (who got us into this mess)?
I have to admit I am prejudiced in favor of FDR democracy. After all, the only reason I am alive is that my dad, a young engineer from Maryland, went to Florence, Alabama to work for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) which is where he met and married my mother.
It confuses me that we are not setting up similar programs that employ people and provide things like electricity, better roads, new forms of energy, etc. Isn't that sort of a no-brainer, as in everybody gets good jobs and things are done that improve America's infrastructure?
It confuses me that we fall for "deregulation" of things that clearly need to be regulated. Why on earth do we want greedy rich people to manage all of the things that average people need? (Fuel, food, etc.)
It confuses me and it breaks my heart that this wonderful nation, founded on such high principles, is now not only the most unpopular country in the world but also seems bent on crushing its 90% of citizens who are not rich.
I am sure I am not the only person who will move to another country if McCain is elected (or even more horrible, he dies soon and Sarah Palin is president.)
Lucky for me, I have a daughter who is a Canadian resident and is very anxious to sponsor me. I will probably move to Canada if McCain/Palin is elected.
But I remain confused that a country as great as the United States of America could have sunk to this level. It is very hard to have been so proud of your country for most of your life----and then feel ashamed and confused.
