Taking a break from the Orange tonight, decided to watch the Emmy's: TV's version of the Oscars. Light, fluffy fair with usually little substance.
Well, maybe not so fluffy tonight...
There have been some politics thrown in. Honoring Don Rickles, Kathy Griffin said they looked liked McSame and Palin standing there. There has already one mention of the "Bridge to Nowhere".
Martin Sheen talked about West Wing and urged everyone to vote. Laura Linney won for "John Adams" and mentioned how the founding fathers were community organizers.
Now Recount has won a two Emmy's so far and both recipients mentioned that this year looks like another close election - so vote!
I think it is great that a show, watched worldwide, is urging us to all participate and vote. So next week when we are calling, canvassing and registering voters, something like this might motivate a first time voter.
(will update with youtube when they come available)
Update 1: Here is a quick blurb found on Tommy Smothers' emmy:
Comedian Tommy Smothers, onetime "Smothers Brothers" scribe Steve Martin pointed out, had left his name off the list submitted to the Emmys for the writing award in 1969 so as not to inflame their attitudes at a time when the ever-topical Smothers show was the subject of controversy. When the show's staff won, Smothers was left out.
Smothers accepted emotionally, concluding his speech, "There's nothing more scary than watching ignorance in action. So I dedicate this to add the people who feel compelled to speak out ... to speak truth to power."
Found a more complete quote :
It's hard for me to stay silent when I keep hearing that peace is only attainable through war. And there's nothing more scary than watching ignorance in action," he said, dedicating his award to "all people who feel compelled to speak out, and are not afraid to speak to power, and won't shut up and refuse to be silenced."
Update 2:
30 Rock just won best Comedy Series and Tina Fey said during the acceptance speech that they were "glad to have jobs in this turkey burger economy".
Update 3: From one of the Recount wins:
This award really belongs to the men and women on the ground fighting to have every vote count and they will be there again Nov. 4," says exec prod Paula Weinstein. "Vote."
