The paper industry contributes heavily to Republicans, much more than Democrats. The AF&PA PAC has contributed to Republicans over Democrats 2 to 1 in this cycle in donations to Senate and House candidates.
You can check their contributions at campaignmoney.com. This is a pattern for paper companies. Who could forget (I sure don't) the 100,000 dollars that International Paper gave for Bush's inauguration? (.pdf) What a great day for American democracy.
The paper industry has a lot to lose if Obama wins: they have been fighting regulation for decades, of course, but more importantly, any constraint on energy use or on forests (favoring forest carbon storage over harvest) is anathema to this industry. Mostly, the industry at large is hungry to damage things, like Palin is hungry for moose. Certainly they would benefit by accepting the changes and getting to work to solve them, but it's not their style.
What is to be done? Well, to start, we can use less paper and stop feeding the industry. Everyone should go to Shrink and make a pledge to use less paper... and then follow through. Paper is one of the most energy intensive industries and eats up our forests at an amazing rate. Use less paper, it's critical to combating climate change!
