During Katie Couric’s interview with Sarah Palin, one particular comment shocked me. She placed the blame for the current financial collapse at the feet of the American homeowner.
According to Sarah Palin, it was the American family’s fault for wanting a home of their own, a yard for their kids. How dare they want better for themselves and their children!
How foolish the homeowners were to believe the banks and the mortgage companies when they were pre-approved for loans based on their income. Of course, they should have known more than people with banking and finance degrees. They should have recognized that home ownership was too good to be true and turned it down.
American homeowner
How gullible they were to assume that the jobs they had had for years would stay in this country and not be shipped overseas or cut outright in order to strength the bottom line for the shareholders and the CEO’s golden parachutes.
How short sighted they were not to realize that the price of gasoline would triple in eight years due to oil speculation so that it was nearly impossible for a middle class family to heat a home or not spend half a paycheck just paying for the gas to get to work.
Yes, in Sarah Palin’s world view it’s the American people’s fault causing this to happen to the poor, unfortunate corporations that now need our assistance. We dreamt beyond our station and had we been clever enough to see it was all a pipe dream, none of this would have ever happened.
We were in the wrong place at the wrong time and our clothes were too provocative. It’s our fault.
Well, I’ll say this for Palin, at least she’s consistent.
