It seems from all of the headlines that McCain is shaking up the financial rescue plan negotiations. Has he actually stated a position, or is it all more carefully choreographed politicization?
I've written about this quite a lot in the last few weeks; how political theater has become McCain's campaign strategy. It started after the Obama love-fest in Denver, when McCain's poll numbers began falling. He unveiled his very interesting choice of a running mate. Then he took advantage of a possible devastating hurricane because it was politically expedient. Now he's hijacking the headlines again during this financial crisis. He is politicizing anything for his own personal gain. He decides to suspend his campaign, and possibly cancel the debate. Is it just a coincidence that his poll numbers have been falling again? He's a desperate man, and desperate men will do anything.
Are the Rove/McCain team so devious as to use this crisis for their own political gain? Yes, they are. Are the Republicans, including Bush, willing actors in this political theater? I believe that Rove decided it was time for McCain to be seen as a Maverick again. I think this has all been designed to look like the Republicans, lead by McCain, are fighting against Bush and the Dems, thereby giving all of the pundits the opportunity to pull out the Maverick moniker.
Think about it:
*Bush comes out and puts the fear into the American people.
*McCain after first acting defiant ("I'd fire him"), then changing his tune to a more middle of the road position--is he for or against the bailout?
*After McCain arrives in Washington, to save the day, ala Mighty Mouse, the Republicans begin peeling themselves away from the original plan.
Watch how this plays out. It will be Bush and the Dems against McCain and the Republican Not-For-Primetime-Players. In the end everyone loses; especially the American people. One final point; it seems very interesting to me how Bush, who wishes to spread democracy, thinks that what McCain is doing, politicizing the crisis, and postponing a presidential debate, is acceptable. What about our democracy? The American people want to see a debate...we have the right, in order to make an educated decision on November 4th.
