Mssouri Governor Matt Blunt released a statement today accusing the Obama campaign of using "police state tactics" to intimidate the opposition.
"St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch, St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer, and Obama and the leader of his Missouri campaign Senator Claire McCaskill have attached the stench of police state tactics to the Obama-Biden campaign.
"What Senator Obama and his helpers are doing is scandalous beyond words, the party that claims to be the party of Thomas Jefferson is abusing the justice system and offices of public trust to silence political criticism with threats of prosecution and criminal punishment.
The reason for this accusation is made perfectly clear:
The only conceivable purpose of Messrs. McCulloch, Obama and the others is to frighten people away from expressing themselves, to chill free and open debate, to suppress support and donations to conservative organizations targeted by this anti-civil rights, to strangle criticism of Mr. Obama, to suppress ads about his support of higher taxes, and to choke out criticism on television, radio, the Internet, blogs, e-mail and daily conversation about the election.
It looks like Gov. Blunt considers the truth to be un-American.
It is also significant that there is absolutely no documentation of the "police state tactics" allegedly being employed. I guess that since Gov. Blunt says it's true, it must be true. If that sounds like a certain presidential candidate, then maybe it's no coincidence.
UPDATE: Several people have commented that there are no substantive allegations in Gov. Blunt's online statement. This is true. I also checked several MSM sites and could find nothing about this.
What struck me about this is that it could have been written by McCain's staff: It's full of unsubstantiated allegations wrapped up to look like the second coming of the Brownshirts. However, it is an official statement from a state governor...who just happens to be running for reelection. And on a related note, try Googling "vote caging missouri." There seems to be a problem here.
