Well we had our debate party on friday night along with our drinking game ( not a good idea as all had to watch the debate again Saturday morning)Funny thing was all 6 republicans we had invited cancelled last minute on us. It made me ponder...did republicans have their own debate party's?? Or did they need to watch it alone and in the dark as some sort of mastubatory adventure. I later found out it was the latter! We were hoping to convert the ill informed but didn't get the chance till we canvassed on sunday.
more below the fold
My Friday afternoon started out terribly... Went to pick up my 6 year old from school and i was sporting my Obama T shirt. I happened to cross paths with 3 dads i did not know.. one of them snickered and said " Great another Obamanite"then the second turned to the third and asked " you still voting for McCain?" He proudly answered ." Abso freakin Lutley" all for my benefit.. I then went to a place i now regret and responded " Racist? Moron? or ill informed"? I know, i know i shouldn't stoop to that level, although at the time i thought i was throwing them a bone with ill informed.Thats how my friday started it didnt get better till Sunday.
I should tell you my family is lucky. We live in Studio City, CA. If the vote was today Obama would win the area in my estimate 62% to 38%. For the first time this year i saw a McCain/Palin bumper sticker on Wednesday. In this area we have what i call Closet republicans, so when instances that happened to me on Friday occur its quite suprising .
Canvassing in this area for Obama is not the task it was for Barney Frank in 1980 so i will not speak of doom and gloom stories. You live here long enough and talk to enough people you would swear Obama was already president. I know it is not that easy. What I have found over the past few weeks is the growing concern of what will Obama be able to accomplish. My response to this even months ago was Very little in his first term. I've been on the Obama bandwagon since 2004. I even predicted a Biden Obama ticket in the fall of that year ( got it backwards). But I have always been a realist when it comes to Washington and change. Now the voices are even louder " What can he do now with the economy so in the shitter and in the tank for status qou.
When the arguement turns to what can he accomplish i always go to 2 things that Obama brings to the table that no other politician can. These 2 things will take place immeadiately once he has been sworn in to the oath of the office. These 2 things may just be on equal footing or even surpass the economy or healthcare. Once and not if Barack Obama is President of the United States it will A) be the beginning of a Post Racial America and B) how other nations view us in a positive light for the first time in decades. SO when out there working for the cause and need a talking point i think its important to highlight both!
