The AP is reporting a death toll of at least 126 people as Gonaives, Haiti is almost completely underwater. Haitians are reporting that they've had nothing to eat in two or, in some cases, three days. They may not be able to find anything for a while. The full story is here.

While Hanna is drifting North, Ike has been upgraded to a hurricane and will be moving across the Atlantic over the next several days. Though it is early, the expected path is just north of Haiti. (expected path)
Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Gustav flooded out her crops and livestock. The death toll is rising. We should call upon our elected leaders to not only prepare for Hurricane Hanna's arrival on the east coast, but reach out to our all too often island neighbors to the south.
Haitians are strong people - indeed, I remind it is the only country in the history of the west to have been born of a slave rebellion. However, they will not be able to go this one alone. Myanmar, Sri Lanka...Haiti could be next on the list. Let us call upon our elected officials and the UN to stay prepared and begin to help.
UPDATED: 9:25 - Global Voices Online members are reporting that the Dominican seems to have fared better than Haiti at this point but that Jamaica and Cuba are facing terrible losses as well. Let us keep them all in our prayers
