Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright campaigned for Barack in Pennsylvania, yesterday. I have respected Albright for many years - as the first female Secretary of State, I have always found her views of the world forthright and informative. Speaking today before a packed hall at Bryn Mawr college in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, Secretary Albright laid out an outline of the issues that will need to be addressed in the world today. She left no doubt about how she felt about Barack being up to these challenges.
She started with stating we are facing a crucial election - more than any other election. The issues she believes the next president will need to face (that I think that are included in her new book "memo to the president elect") :
- How to fight terrorism without creating new terrorists.
* even Rumsfield admits we have created more terrorists
- Proliferation of Nuclear weapons
* how to we keep the worst weapons from the worst peoples
- How to restore the good name of democracy?
* you can't impose democracy - that is an oxymoron.
- how to deal with the negative aspects of Globalization
* growing gap between rich and poor
* poor being marginalized feeds recruiting for terrorism
- Global warming, energy issues, food crises
She continues to discuss how she views diplomacy. She talks of her fear was /is that Iraq will go down as the greatest disaster in American foreign policy.
She ends with
"I want a president who's confident rather than certain...we have had a certain president who does not know what he doesn't know.... I want a 21st president who is dedicated, and who has our interests at heart, and who understands how our economy, and our health of our people, and education of people, and respect for women, and equal pay for equal work, and good judges, and wants the United States to do the right thing - that is Barack Obama! And I am going out there and work my tail off for him!'
