Apparently, you could purchase a dress worn by Princess Diana and a Hummer to drive around in while you wore it, and still not spend as much money as Cindy McCain spent decking herself out for the humble RNC Convention Tuesday night.
Or, if that's not your thing, you could opt for a couple of single-family homes in Wasilla, Alaska, for the same price. Or in Arizona, as Vanity Fair points out....
Vanity Fair gives an estimated break-down of the cost of the outfits worn by First Lady Laura Bush and First Lady Candidate Cindy McCain Tuesday night.
Laura Bush
Oscar de la Renta suit: $2,500
Stuart Weitzman heels: $325
Pearl stud earrings: $600–$1,500
Total: Between $3,425 and $4,325
Cindy McCain
Oscar de la Renta dress: $3,000
Chanel J12 White Ceramic Watch: $4,500
Three-carat diamond earrings: $280,000
Four-strand pearl necklace: $11,000–$25,000
Shoes, designer unknown: $600
Total: Between $299,100 and $313,100
Wow! No wonder McCain has so many houses: his wife has the price of a Scottsdale split-level hanging from her ears.
Sarah Palin is sorry Wasilla, Alaska, isn't "flashy enough" for Senator Obama, as she said in her speech the next night at the Convention. Senator Obama isn't the one I would be worried about. If Cindy went to visit Palin, I guess we wouldn't see her shopping here:
Update: from 4casaandchlo in the comments:
IT IS SO INSULTING to me that a woman who would purportedly be our "First Lady" would show up in an outfit that cost roughly 6 times that of the national median income. I believe nothing says "F.U.!" quite like a flagrant display of gratuitous wealth. Let me ask Cindy some questions that I know she doesn't know the anwser to:
1. How many students could you have paid tuition for with just those two earings?
2. How many families could you have bought health insurance for with those two earings?
3. How much medication (No, not that kind Cindy) could you have provided to poor who choose to not eat so they get medicine.
4. Tough One: How many homes could you have provided to families Cindy?
5. Extra Credit: How much happiness have you bought Cindy, you don't really come across as someone who is. . . at peace.
