If you haven't been to Marc Ambinder's blog over at the Atlantic, you've missed a real jewel. In an interview w/ CBS' Katie Couric, apparently either Cindy McCain doesn't know where her own husband stands on Roe v. Wade, or she just doesn't understand the issue at all. More below the fold.http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/...
In the interview, Cindy's asked whether or not she believes that Roe v. Wade should be overturned. Cindy, unequivocally, responds w/ a series of incredulous "No!"s. Surprised, Katie Couric asks her why -- since Senator McSame does. "No, I don't think he does," is Cindy's response. Katie Couric corrects her, stating (correctly, I might add) that the great Senator POW does believe that Roe should be overturned. Puzzled, and after an off-mic conversation, Cindy changes her mind and says that she agrees that Roe should be a state issue. She never does clearly say whether or not she believes Roe should be overturned, but she's clearly so frazzled by this late-breaking news that the best she could do was flip-flop on the state issue.
KATIE COURIC:
And-- and do you believe Roe v. Wade should be overturned?
CINDY MCCAIN:
No, no, no, no--
KATIE COURIC:
No? Why not? Your husband does.
CINDY MCCAIN:
No, I don't think he does.
KATIE COURIC:
He believes that it should be overturned, that's what he told me, and that it-- it should go to the state.
CINDY MCCAIN:
Well, in that respect--
(OFF-MIC CONVERSATION)
CINDY MCCAIN:
--yeah, yes, I do. That-- I understand what you're saying now, I agree with the states, it should have (UNINTEL).
KATIE COURIC:
But, you-- so you do believe it should be overturned or it shouldn't be overturned?
CINDY MCCAIN:
I believe it's a state issue, that I do believe.
KATIE COURIC:
Okay, all right, great, thank you so much.
Let's set aside all the conversations about how bizarre it is for a potential first lady to not know her husband's stand on one of the most basic issues in a complex campaign. I mean, let's face it, considering the state of health care, Iraq, and alternative energies, the abortion issue isn't the most difficult one for a person who campaigns every day to wrap her brain around. Still, I'm going to let that go.
If Cindy doesn't even know where John stands on the issue, how many millions of Americans, how many millions of women don't know where John stands on this most fundamental issue? Isn't this McSame's goal? It seems to me as though he wants there to be confusion on the issue b/c he knows that it's a loser nationally if people are made aware. So he's trying to figure out a way to be clear to the base (here's Sarah Palin -- wink, wink!) and muddle the issue to the electorate.
The bottom line is this -- McSame has said, on many occasions, that he feels that Roe was wrongly decided, that he would appoint Supreme Court justices in the mold of Roberts, Alito, Scalia, and Thomas who want nothing more than to overturn Roe, and that that is his goal. Yet people like HIS OWN FREAKING WIFE, and the Hillary supporter who did a commercial for McCain don't even know where he stands on this issue.
I realize that Obama has run an ad on this but people across the country need to be made aware of McSame's neanderthal-like approach on this subject. His VP selection wouldn't even support an abortion if her 12-year old daughter was raped! And he's been clear that he, too, wants this important decision overturned.
There's likely to be at least 2, and possibly 3 vacancies on the Supreme Court during the next 4 years. Even if McSame served but 1 term, he could have a lasting impact on the Court that would affect American women for decades and everyone needs to know the simple facts, so that they may make an informed decision.http://www.pensitoreview.com/...
