Hillary Clinton speaks Monday for the first time since the GOP convention, and what's her task? To nail John McCain for his shallow national "platform" and his consequent lack of attention to really important issues.
What?? Not nailing Palin?? Those of us who initially thought Hillary would be the perfect knock-out punch for a sham GOP version of her got it all wrong...
Hillary is "not the answer when it comes to winning conservative women — she never was — and we’re not going to be anybody’s attack dog against Sarah Palin," said a Clinton insider. "To be fair to Obama’s people, they haven’t asked us to do that."
The last sentence is even more telling than the first: Obama's people haven't asked Hillary to knock Palin. And why would that be?
My guess: because Obama's people - and you better believe Clinton's, too - know Palin is the SMOKESCREEN for McCain. The harder we all try to douse enthusiasm for the pretty, charismatic GOP Alaskan governor, the less time we spend emphasizing the serious downsides of a McCain presidency. And that means we fall into a very serious trap set by McCain and his Rovian advisors.
When we blog, when we comment on websites, when we call voters, when we talk to our friends and family about this election and the issues we really care about, it's imperative we stick to the most important truth of all: McCain is More of the Same. He's the real danger to us and to the future of our children, as he - if elected - would, like Bush, appoint Scalia Supreme Court justices and sabotage comprehensive healthcare proposals and order drillings in every square foot of our seas and start bullying Russia and other countries suddenly deemed untrustworthy. In the meantime, Palin would start her multiple years of tutoring "at the feet of the Master," per McCain's advisor, Charlie Black.
No, no...McCain intends to keep his own fingers on the buttons.
That's not a pretty thought. Keep it in mind as we move ahead.
