We’ve done a lot of teeth-gnashing about how best to attack Sarah Palin. Lord knows she’s given us plenty of ammunition. But there’s been some hesitancy about going full throttle after her because, well, she’s a "Mother of Five with a Down syndrome baby," etc.
With the specter of disaffected Hillary voters still lurking, Obama supporters are understandably a little hesitant about going too hard after Palin. The good thing is, we don’t really have to, at least not directly.
Every lie, every far-right position, example of corruption of Palin’s should be framed not to attack Palin but instead pinned on McCain’s for picking her. Instead of saying, "Palin is unqualified or wrong because ..." we should say, "What kind of a candidate would pick somebody who is ...?" Because that really gets to the heart of the matter. This is not about Palin. It’s about McCain.
Someone whose motto is "Country First" shouldn’t pick someone clearly unready on Day 1 to run the country. So instead of saying that Palin isn’t ready, we have to frame it as, "What kind of candidate would pick someone who’s clearly not ready on Day 1?" As McCain attempts to attract moderates, we must say, "What kind of a candidate would pick someone who believes Creationism should be taught in the public schools and believes it’s OK to try to get the town librarian to censor books?" And on down the line.
I believe the Palin bubble will slowly leak as more and more distasteful comes out about her. But in the end, she’s not running for president. Let’s make sure we go after the candidate who is and make him pay for making such a cynical pick.
