In 2000, John McCain (someone that many moderate Republicans and some moderate Democrats) was a reasonable man, representing himself as a maverick. He called Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and the other out-of-touch Evangelicals "Agents of Intolerance" and said they had an "evil influence" on the Republican party.
This endeared him to many Independents.
And now? He picks a VP who believes church is meant to cure gays, God had/has a plan for a pipeline and told us to go Iraq. Let's not even talk about abstinence (except to point out the one obvious trait of her Republicanism - she's a hypocrite).
After losing in the GOP nomination in 2000 - he bent over backwards to please President Bush, so that he'd get the nomination now. He did, after he and Huckabee took out Romney, and you saw him beg for the endorsement of John Hagee - and got it. John Hagee is one of those out-of-touch Evangelicals who believes that the Catholic church is "the Whore of Babylon", etc etc.
I'm sure New Hampshire - where the race is tight - would appreciate knowing, John. Which is it - do you now support Hagee, Robertson and Falwell? Or, is Sarah Palin merely being setup as a pawn - someone that the Religious Right believes will have power, but really is just tossed to them to get them to show up? Is John a strong Religious Right supporter or someone just using them for political gain, to ignore them much like George W Bush did?
It's time we find out who McCain is selling out - Evangelicals or Independents.
