Hello Wheebles,
This week I went to the Oregon coast near Newport just to hang out and let my dog, Eiseley, a standard poodle named after the wonderful anthropologist and nature writer, Loren Eiseley, run around like a maniac on the beach. I don't know what it is about being on the beach, but dogs love it. I wish I had his energy!
Unfortunately, I gained a pound or two, which seems pretty typical whenever I go on a trip. Even with a hotel room with a microwave and refrigerator, it's so hard to stick to some regimen and not end up eating more or differently than I usually do. Perhaps we can share some of our tricks for staying on task when traveling, either in terms of food or fitness routines.
Meanwhile, back at home, I've been getting a pretty good workout doing yard work and landscaping. I just finished putting in a brick pathway, or rather, getting the bricks laid in place and ready for sand to be spread on top. This involved lots of shoveling of dirt, crawling around and contorting myself into odd positions, hauling bricks between various places in my yard, pounding bricks (and once or twice a finger) with a rubber mallet loaned to me by a neighbor, and fending off the above-mentioned dog, who wants to either "help" by making off with my tools or have me throw his toys for him to chase. All of this went on in 90-degree heat, as well.
Yard work is one of those activities that reminds you of the muscles you don't always use, but for me, anyway, it also translates into a good night's sleep!
I was hoping to post something about what anthropologists have to say about the pre-agricultural diet and nutrition, but with the trip to the coast and other distractions....well, you know how that goes. So that's what I'll write about next week. Tonight, let's just talk about staying on task when going on vacation or having company or experiencing other disruptions in our daily lives.
Here's the UPDATED WHEE roster, converted back into a single column. I think it's easier to maintain this way--people can be added alphabetically. Let us know if your name is supposed to be there but isn't, is spelled wrong, etc.
