I know, I know... Life is a bitch – a constant, ever growing list of things to do, places to go, people to see. There is so much pressure and self-imposed stress. You just made it through the Holidays, but in some respects, the New Year promises to be as sucky as the old year, and you need a break. Everyone seems to want something from you – Mom on the answering machine, the family, the kids, the boss, the creditors... even the scanner at the supermarket seems to be impatient with you. And you put those demands on your shoulders and carry them around all day long. You’re too tired to walk another step, and too put-upon to sit down. So just stand there and let it all go.
Take a break from the juggling act, and drop everything. Let the damn phone ring; unplug it for a day or two. Lose the cell phone under the sofa pillow. Tell your GPS where to go, for a change. You say that "they" will worry? Let them worry! The purpose of your life is not to prop everyone else up, or hold the string for everyone else's kite. So let them fail; let them stumble and fall. Know what? They will get a band-aid for the boo-boo, get up, dust themselves off and continue. The bill collector won’t die if you don’t answer that phone. He’ll just dial someone else. In today’s economy, he will always have someone else to call.
Forgot to feed the dog/cat/bird/hamster – (fill in the blank)? Don’t worry about it. Michael Vick was nailed to a cross for your sins. Recently, they broadcast a video of a guy tossing a cat 25 feet up into the air. The cat tumbled and tumbled in mid-air, but hit the ground on all four feet, then scampered away, eager to live out his other eight lives. The point is that if you remove yourself from the equation long enough to take a breather, the world will survive without you.
John Lennon said it best: "Let It Be." Hug someone today... and make sure that it’s yourself.
