I was very distressed by what you said in your interview:
We have not made final decisions, but my instinct is for us to focus on how do we make sure that moving forward we are doing the right thing. That doesn't mean that if somebody has blatantly broken the law, that they are above the law. But my orientation's going to be to move forward.
What do you mean, IF? Bush is a felon. He committed crimes that are punishable by decades in prison. There is no debate about this. Bush does not deny this. He simply says that he did it for the right reasons.
You are a constitutional lawyer! Tell me, is there a line in the constitution that says you may violate the constitution and other laws as long as you have a really good reason?
And what on earth do you mean by moving forward?
Will you stop prosecuting any crimes then? After all, most crimes take place in the past. Seems like you can do away with the entire Department of Justice! The good thing of course is that this will save a fortune on cops and lawyers that will no longer be needed, which you can then use in your stimulus plan.
Or is it only highly-placed politicians that are not going to be prosecuted?
So, ultimately, [Holder]'s going to be making some calls, but my general belief is that when it comes to national security, what we have to focus on is getting things right in the future, as opposed looking at what we got wrong in the past.
This is simpy disgusting. How is this ever going to work? "The important thing is to avoid future murders, as opposed to examining murders that happened in the past." What would you think of that?
Why am I talking about murder, you may ask? I meant that literally. People have died in Guantanamo Bay. One million Iraqis are missing, presumed dead. The United States is responsible for this. Bush is responsible for this. Do you know what is the penalty for ordering a murder?
Let me finish off with a quote from another president: "The buck stops here." Soon, it will stop with you, Barack. If you don't use this unique opportunity to make sure the law applies equally to a president and a junkie, how are things ever going to change?
