The major news media today are noting the passing of artist Andrew Wyeth, who died at his Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania home today at age 91. As reported in this NY Times article, Mr. Wyeth’s creative contribution (like that of his fellow Pennsylvanian, James Michener, I will add) was highly appreciated by throngs while disdained by many others as technically skilled, lowbrow art.
As a long-time Delaware resident, I received a fair bit of exposure to Wyeth, whose art featured many rural scenes taken from picturesque nearby southeastern Pennsylvania. I am not well versed in art, and grew up on a farm; perhaps (as Wyeth’s critics might say) that’s why I have generally enjoyed Wyeth’s work. I’ve made a couple of visits to the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, which also features works by Wyeth’s father N. C. Wyeth and son Jamie Wyeth.
More than three decades ago, while attending the University of Delaware, I wandered into one of those cheap art print sales that was set up somewhere on campus. I spied a print of "Christina’s World" (a Wyeth scene in rural Maine, where he spent summers) and, though completely unfamiliar with the piece, liked it a lot and bought a copy. Only later did I learn it was actually Wyeth’s most famous work.
So do you enjoy Wyeth’s work, or (like a typical highfalootin art snob, heh heh) dislike/disparage/hate it?
Update: I don't know why the poll questions are garbled; I thought they were OK before I hit "Publish." Hopefully you still get the gist.
