Over the past few days and weeks the media has been given Bush 43 and his cohorts a chance to create a revisionist view of the past 8 years. All I can say is go, just go.
I don't want to hear any more about Bush's last anything: a ride on Air Force One to celebrate his daddy, his last press conference, his last trip to Camp David, his farewell address to the country, or Barney's last dump on the White House lawn.
I just want it to be over.
I guess his supporters - what's left of them anyway - feel compelled to justify the tragedy of the past eight years. The apologists try to make me feel good by trumpeting the fact that there hasn't been an attack on the US similar to 9/11. I don't buy it. Wasn't this guy the President on 9/11? Didn't he get warnings about what was coming up? Did he prevent the big one? No, he failed in that department as well.
Using this same line of reasoning, anything bad that happens in the first 7 months and 23 days of the Obama administration can't be counted against him. That is a pretty good honeymoon, and I think he deserves it. But to be honest I will hold him accountable as well for things that happen - or don't happen - on his watch.
Is it tempting to list all of his failures, missteps, gaffs, and disappointments. But I don't want to be reminded.
Like the majority of Americans I am looking forward to Barack Obama taking charge and wish him well. Already it is shaping up to be as good of a crew as we could hope for to try to clean up the mess that Bush left. But to me, the best thing of all will be that George Bush will no longer be in my living room on the television. I won't have to use the TiVo forward button every time his face shows up. I won't see him as much on the internet. No one will be talking about him in casual conversations. If there is any justice he will quickly fade away. And it can't be too soon.
So Bush, go, just go.
