This is a pretty simple poll:
Do you consider yourself a Believer (Religious) or non-Believer (Agnostic/Atheist)?
Recent diaries about the use of "God" in the upcoming inauguration - including a lawsuit by atheists' Constitutional rights champion Michael Newdow - prompted hundreds of responses. Many were from non-believer Kossacks who admit they've been "in the closet" their whole lives - reluctantly confessing they've been abused since childhood, starting with teachers and classmates, just for quietly (even silently) trying to stand up for their minority beliefs.
This poll and diary let religious and non-religious people participate anonymously - and if you like, "come out" too.
Two diary Comments let you come out of the closet as non-religious, or as religious - by Recommending them. Be sure to take the anonymous poll too. To widen the audience and make the poll more accurate, Recommend the diary itself.
When measured by the American Religious Identification Survey (ARIS) in 2001, the number of self-reporting non-Religious Americans was 15% and doubling about every 11 years. That's a larger demographic than black, Hispanic, gay, or any religious minority. Yet, unlike those groups, non-Believers are not represented in any branch of government - except perhaps by other closet non-Believers. (Update: thanks for reminding me that Pete Stark is the one out-of-closet atheist in Congress. Stark also considers himself a Unitarian - thanks ogre.)
It's said that the first step toward equal rights for a minority is to recognize you're not alone, set aside fears, come out of the closet if you aren't already, and stand up in solidarity with others.
UPDATE:
In case you find the poll confusing:
If you are "spiritual" or "appreciate a higher power" but are not Religious you should check non-Believer in the simple anonymous poll.
