Strike while the iron is hot, folks. Bush is already out of office, so if there were ever a time when those spineless losers in congress could be induced to finally do the right thing, it's now.
Those of us who've been pushing for this for years have been continually astonished as month by month, congress remained inert, allowing one disaster after another to unfold under a simpleton who wasn't even elected in the first place. We were attacked on our own soil by a ragtag bunch of criminals who, we later found out, the Administration even had fair warning about in advance. We entered a war under the worst possible circumstances, a war of aggression whose illegal "declaration" was rammed through the congress with a noxious combination of deception and intimidation -- this Administration lied to the American People and our duly elected representatives in our legislative bodies.
But if these crimes weren't enough for you to finally write the letter to that worthless yes-man of a congressman you've been putting off all these years, let's not forget: this was only the beginning of the historic travesty of the Bush Administration. Shortly following the initiation of war against a country that neither attacked nor seriously threatened us, we learned that the madness bubbling up from the fear and rage driven political fringe on the Right had found expression in policy: America had begun torturing its prisoners of war. The long record of war crimes perpetrated by this past Administration should be more than enough for us to finally get off our dead asses and impeach these thugs.
And what about the domestic front? What of their indifference to the suffering of those caught in the tragic aftermath of the Katrina disaster in New Orleans -- yet another occasion on which they had fair warning but failed to respond, even after the fact! What of their war on science, their elevation of bizarre superstition above expert scientific opinion? What of their failure to adequately address malfeasance in business circles, ranging from Enron in the early years, to the financial meltdown of the past two? What of their complicity in the same? What of the US Attorneys, Valerie Wilson, and all the other pieces of politicization, recrimination, intimidation and corruption these crooks visited on this land and its government? While opinions may vary as to the extent of legal culpability Bush and his cronies are exposed to in these instances, the sheer incompetence alone amounts to high crime in this blogger's opinion.
That's why I implore all of you to write your Senators and Representatives post haste! Impeachment has been the order of the day for some time now and it's time we show not just these crooks, but all the crooks that might someday follow, that justice is waiting, somewhere, somehow, even if only retroactively.
At this point, with Bush out, impeachment may have the smallest consequence, but it is symbolic nevertheless. Recall that Bill Clinton was not, in fact, removed from office by impeachment either, yet the fact of the scandal and its formalization would hobble the party going forward. Indeed, precisely now is the time to impeach, as the expense in political capital is surely now at the lowest it's ever been. Once, again, please, write those Congressmen and send letters to the editors of your local newspapers. A record of such neglect, incompetence, and outright crime cannot be allowed to slink by without incurring the official censure of the American People, as meted out by our elected representatives.
