This story is a tad old, and I don't know if it's been diaried already. If it has been I will certainly delete.
There was a girls High School basketball game a few nights ago that had the very unusual final score of 100-0. http://www.dallasnews.com/... At first glance you might get a little peeved with any team, and any coach that allows it's team to run up such a score on it's opponent, but before you get angry, let me assure you the story gets worse.
The team on the winning end was a private Christian school in Texas known as The Covenant. They led 59-0 at the half, and you would think that would be the time to empty the bench, back off a bit, and bring in the reserves. No way, Covenant opened up the second half with a full court press and shooting for 3 pointers, in an all out assault to reach 100. During the massacre they were cheered on by their fans also eager to reach that 3 figure total. They didn't let up until they finally reached 100 with 4 minutes remaining in the game.
The team on the losing end of the score was the Dallas Academy, renowned for its work with students with a variety of learning problems. The girls varsity basketball team has only 8 players on it, none of whom would likely play on any other girls varsity team in the state. The entire school has only 20 girls, According to their Athletic Director Jeremy Civello:
The Bulldogs play for more than the final score. They play in hope of improving skills, learning teamwork and picking up whatever life lessons athletics may bring.
At this point it seems like The Covenant is having a case of blowout remorse and is seeking to forfeit the 100-0 win. http://highschool.rivals.com/... In a statement on the Covenant Web site, Kyle Queal, the head of the school, said
the game "does not reflect a Christ-like and honorable approach to competition. We humbly apologize for our actions and seek the forgiveness of Dallas Academy, TAPPS and our community."
In my view I think it's too little, too late. I say keep your win, and your final score. Forfeiting the game, at this point doesn't change what you already did. Forfeiting the game doesn't reverse the damage already done.
As for the Academy Civello told his girls the life lesson they could take from their loss:
"I told them someday they will be on top in a similar situation and they should remember how they felt when some people were cheering for a team to score a hundred points and shut us out. Hopefully, my girls all learned a lesson in sportsmanship that will last them a lifetime."
