A new report from the Nashville Scene publishes a few facts about the English Only Initiative in Nashville.
Of the $84,205 raised for the initiative, only SIX(6)(dare I say 'seis'?) people from Nashville donated to the cause. All but one gave $200 or less!
That's right, an initiative that cost Nashville over $300,000 to host in a special election garnered donations from only SIX Nashvillians, raising less than $7,000 total! The vast bulk of the money came from an out-of-state group, Pro English.
more below the fold....
No wonder the English Only committee purposefully missed their filing deadline with the state! They didn't want it revealed before the election that almost all of their money came from
...the advocacy group Pro English, an out-of-state group that is tied to Dr. John Tanton, who has founded other anti-immigrant organizations that have been designated as "hate groups" by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
It's good to know that sometimes out-of-state influences can be ignored! It's even more gratifying to know that donations opposing the English Only Law topped $286,000, coming from several big-name local sources, including Vanderbilt University and even more importantly Mayor Karl Dean himself, who strongly opposed the measure! It's good to know that not only did the measure go down in flames, but that support for the measure, at least in terms of donated dollars, was practically nil.
