I have no objection to Israel using its armed forces to go into Gaza to find and kill the Hamas members who are sending rockets into Israel. That only makes sense.
But Israel has to own up to fact that the children of Gaza are their repsonsibility since Israel is the only functioning governmental institution that controls their lives.
As Colin Powell said "You break it. You own it."
Israel won the war against Palestinians. As victors, they have confined the losers to designated areas and control access to the rest of the world. With their victory comes responsibilty. Just like the Allies rebuilt Germany and facist Europe, the Israelis need to own up that they need to re-build the land they have retricted the Palestinians to. If there are radicals that will not accept help and want to continue to fight then Israel needs to deal with it with force --but only as part of a larger project to make the area function as a safe society for the innocent.
No matter how much it costs the average Israel citizen in taxes and no matter how much discipline is needed to be fused into the Israeli military, they must conduct their actions to avoid death to Palestinian children.
It's their problem and the only issue I have with Israel in my following of the conflict is that Israel does not seem no own up to this part of their responsibility.
UPDATE:
In case anybody needs to be reassured, the Hamas militants are more responsible for their children's death and injury if they use their children as shields. They are monsters worthy of no defense and nothing in this diary pretends to defend them.
But I do not see those people as being subject to criticism from the civilized world any more than fanatical Al Queda terrorists. I hope Israel is part of that world. Hamas is unfortunately immune to this criticism. Israel should hold themselves to a higher standard.
