Michigan Lieutenant Governor John D. Cherry, Jr., has formed an exploratory committee to run for Governor in 2010.
In the past six years, Cherry has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to get Governor Granholm's agenda passed through a legislature that has been controlled at least in part by Republicans ever since the 1980s. He has been seen as an effective leader, especially when it comes to such matters as higher education and protecting the Great Lakes.
Cherry is a former state representative and senator, having served four years as Senate Democratic Leader before becoming Lieutenant Governor. Cherry's leadership abilities were recognized by his colleagues in 2006, when he was elected Chair of the National Lieutenant Governor's Association.
Cherry occasionally blogs on Michigan Liberal, Blogging for Michigan, and West Michigan Rising.
