This is NOT from The Onion, it's for real.
The Polish authorities in charge of Auschwitz have launched an official site for the former Nazi death camp on the social networking website Facebook.
A spokesman said the move was aimed at reaching the younger generation and educating them about the Holocaust.
Yeah, i'd say you can file this under the "...paved with good intentions" category.
Look, I understand what they're going for here--the Holocaust occurred around 70 years ago, and These Kidz Today® don't know their history, you have to use every means at your disposal to get the word out, etc etc etc...
Still, this just strikes me as a terrible, terrible idea.
Aside from the general unseemliness of the concept, and the bad jokes that write themselves instantly ("Auschwitz threw a snowball at you! Auschwitz wished you happy birthday! Auschwitz attacked you in Mafia Wars!"), there's also the fact that you just KNOW several thousand nutcase Holocaust deniers are going to join the group in order to spew their ignorant, racist bullshit.
This is almost as bad an idea as the "Slavery Theme Park" that Marlon Jackson (Michael's brother) tried to push for awhile back.
Thankfully FaceBook at least made it a Group (which you can join) as opposed to something that you can "Become a Fan Of"...
Update: I should probably add that yes, I'm Jewish myself, and yes, I can see the other side of this, which is why I included the positive options in the poll. I just happen to take a very negative view of it myself.
Am definitely interested in hearing arguments in favor, however (otherwise I wouldn't have posted the diary lol...)
