I apologize for the brevity... I am very short on time.
The Washington legislature passed SB 5688 that grants rights to same-sex couples. It is the "everything but marriage" bill.
A group of concerned citizens decided to use our referendum process to block the law from going into effect. So now we have a vote.
If the bill is approved, it puts us very close to marriage equality in the state of Washington. If the bill is rejected, it sets things back ala California. Some more thoughts...
If you've done all you can for Maine, don't forget us over here on the other coast. I live in SW and I've barely heard of the issue. Nobody I've talked to has heard of the issue. It's not on radio or TV and all the national focus is back east.
So I am afraid of low turnout among the wrong crowd. Some polls released back in September pointed that it had wide support, but the UW poll referred to was of all the electorate. Later polls looking only at likely voters are within the margin of error. It is too close for comfort for me, older (conservative) voters are more likely to return their ballots in an off-year election.
Remember... ballots are in peoples hands now. It's vote by mail. If you are in WA, invest in a book of stamps. Carry it with you and if you talk to someone, give them a stamp if they need it.
If you aren't in WA, but you know someone here, remind them this issue is on the ballot and to mail it in now... Don't procrastinate! And because the wording of the measure is confusing, remember to APPROVE for equality.
