This is a open thread to post advice, questions, Pooties, Woozles - whatever is on your mind. What’s on my mind today is fruit and vegetables.
We all know fruits and vegetables should be part of a healthy diet.
Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables as part of an overall healthy diet may reduce risk for stroke and perhaps other cardiovascular diseases.
Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables as part of an overall healthy diet may reduce risk for type 2 diabetes.
Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables as part of an overall healthy diet may protect against certain cancers, such as mouth, stomach, and colon-rectum cancer.
Diets rich in foods containing fiber, such as fruits and vegetables, may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
Eating fruits and vegetables rich in potassium as part of an overall healthy diet may reduce the risk of developing kidney stones and may help to decrease bone loss.
Eating foods such as fruits that are low in calories per cup instead of some other higher-calorie food may be useful in helping to lower calorie intake.
Most of us know we should be eating 5-9 servings per day
But few of us do.
Fruit and vegetable intake, although rising, is still below the five servings per day recommended in the USDA's Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The average American eats one and one-half servings of vegetables and one serving of fruit per day.
Take a look at Time Magazine's What The World Eats Part I. It shows the average weekly food expenditure for families from around the world. Very interesting (Sorry, I can't tell if copying a couple of the pictures is allowed).
I have never been a fruit or veggie fan, and I have always battled my weight. Something tells me there’s a connection. So I'm adding an addendum to my Holiday Fit Club contract to eat the recommended servings of fruit and vegetables daily.
What's a serving?
1/2 cup of fruit
1 medium piece of fruit
1/4 cup of dried fruit
3/4 cup (6 ounces) of 100% fruit or vegetable juice
1 cup of leafy vegetables
1/2 cup of cooked or raw vegetables
