First diary here, so bear with me. I have the pleasure of living and working in upstate South Carolina, in Spartanburg County, one of the reddest of the red counties in this crazy state, I'd say. The town I live in has had a couple Teabagger rallies, one of which was on the 4th of July and included Alan Keyes as the keynote speaker. So you get the picture.
Just talked to my wife on the phone. She's not as liberal as I am, but still, in this area, would be considered a communist. She keeps her mouth shut around the office, as everyone else there (four others) is a flaming blood-red republican. The kind of place that if she were to speak her mind, she could very well lose her job. Anyway, she tells me this afternoon that a co-worker, who's about as wingnut as it gets, tells her that Oprah is quitting her show (despite having campaigned so hard for Obama) because she's gotten wind of the upcoming tax increases on the wealthy and doesn't want to have to pay the extra taxes that would ensue if she continued her broadcasts. That even Oprah is bailing on him and his policies at this point. I'm quite sure this person isn't intelligent enough to come up with this on her own, so who knows who is spreading this latest ridiculous statement.
My wife laughs, and of course the loon that tells her this thinks she's laughing along with her instead of laughing at her, and the ridiculousness and lunacy of the comment. That's what life is like here in good old upstate South Carolina, where our conservative republican congressman Bob Inglis is reviled for not being conservative enough and having the gall to ask Joe Wilson to apologize for calling Barack Obama a liar.
