I find myself in an odd position. The 2010 state-level elections in my area will see an incumbent Democrat face off against a Republican newcomer. My district is pretty red.
This in and of itself isn't too odd, considering where I live.
What is strange is that the Republican is more liberal than the Democrat. He's what used to be known as a "Rockefeller Republican." He's socially liberal [pro-choice, pro social programs, pro-increased taxes for schools] but conservative in a few other areas.
The Democrat is anti-choice, belongs to a conservative Christian church, and holds some other beliefs that I don't agree with. I voted for him last time, but I held my nose.
None of that is all that strange. Follow me below . . .
The dilemma I face is that I have the chance to work for either on of these candidates in their election campaigns. My job in either campaign would be media and communications. And I'm seriously torn. I want more Democrats in office, but the Republican actually is more liberal than the Democrat.
On the other hand, I can't imagine helping to unseat a Democratic incumbent--especially in an area where conservatives rule.
Still, the Republican is likely to win, and working for the Republican might give me the chance to shape some of his policy positions. I know the family personally, and they're very good people. Like I said, true old-school liberal Republicans. Two close friends of mine--Democrats both--are already on board the his campaign.
So, I'm torn--unsure of who to help. Should I help a Democrat who is too conservative, or a Republican who is fairly liberal.
A DINO or a RINO?
